Meningococcal Serum Sourcing

Meningococcal Vaccine Study

Several different germs can cause serious infection of the blood and nervous system. A germ (bacterium) called meningococcus, can cause several serious complications, including meningitis and infection of the blood. Meningitis affects the brain and spinal cord. It can cause hearing loss, seizures, learning and behaviour problems, severe brain damage and even death in some cases. Meningococcal disease, whilst a rare illness, can happen to anyone but is more common in teenagers, and young children (especially babies).

Meningococcal Vaccine Study

OVERVIEW

Several different germs can cause  serious infection of the blood and nervous system. A germ (bacterium) called meningococcus, can cause several serious complications, including meningitis and infection of the blood. Meningitis affects the brain and spinal cord. It can cause hearing loss, seizures, learning and behaviour problems, severe brain damage and even death in some cases. Meningococcal disease, whilst a rare illness, can happen to anyone but is more common in teenagers, and young children (especially babies).

This research study is planned to obtain serum from blood samples collected from healthy adults, before and after meningococcal vaccination. These samples will be used for developing, validating and maintaining the quality of the blood tests that are used to measure the effect of vaccines.

THE INVESTIGATIONAL VACCINE

Participants on the study will receive one of two vaccines. One is a vaccine that helps to protect against the meningococcus B germ. The other is a vaccine that helps protect against types A, C, W and Y of the meningococcus germ. The use of both vaccines has been licensed in Australia for people from 2 months of age.

WHAT HAPPENS?

You will be required to come to our clinic 4-5 times over a 7-8 month period, each visit you will see the study doctor and then the research team for vaccination and blood draw.

There is no cost for the vaccine or study visits, and you will be compensated for time and travel.

TO BE ELIGIBLE YOU MUST:

Please note – if you are unsure whether you have received the meningococcal vaccine we would still like to hear from you.
