Medical Cannabis Chronic Pain Study

Medical Cannabis Chronic Pain Study

In this study, we are investigating the use of a medical cannabis product, as a potential treatment for chronic back and/or neck pain. This is an experimental treatment and is not yet an approved treatment for pain in Australia.

OVERVIEW

In this study, we are investigating the use of a medical cannabis product, as a potential treatment for chronic back and/or neck pain. This is an experimental treatment and is not yet an approved treatment for pain in Australia.

Current treatment for chronic back/neck pain in Australia includes medications such as paracetamol, ibuprofen and opioids. Current treatment also includes non-drug approaches (exercise, rehabilitation, acupuncture, mindfulness etc). In other countries, medical cannabis products are approved and used for treatment of chronic pain, for example, in the USA.

THE MEDICATION

The medical cannabis product is formulated into a liquid which will be placed under the tongue with a syringe by the participant daily during the course of the study/ The dose will gradually increase during the study, to a maximum of 2 times per day.

WHAT HAPPENS?

This study is a single arm, open label clinical study which means everyone who participates will receive the experimental medication (there is no placebo).

The clinical study will run for approximately 5-6 weeks, and will include 8 study visits to our medical practice over this time, each time seeing the study doctor.
