NEW RESEARCH UNIT AT HOLDSWORTH HOUSE

New research unit for Holdsworth House

Dr Mark Bloch, director of Clinical Trial Research at Holdsworth House Medical Practice (HHMP), has announced the opening of their dedicated self-contained clinical research unit – a first for a general practice in Australia.

HHMP’s large research unit works beside the general practice and allows patients to participate in clinical trials and new treatments. The new unit has its own offices, reception and dedicated facilities located on Level 2 at 32a Oxford Street above the medical practice. The unit will have four staff members (three research coordinators and a research administrator).

Since the practice was founded in 1992, HHMP has participated in almost every major national and international HIV clinical trials in the past few years, and is one of Australia’s largest recruiters for HIV treatment studies.

Information gained from this research has helped to advance the treatment of HIV and develop new improved options fiord HIV care. Patients who have been involved have made a major contribution to progress in understanding and controlling HIV.

The research unit has participated in over 50 studies, and is constantly supervising the progress of between 20 and 30 trials at any time. The number of participants for each trial ranges from five to over 200.

As a result, patients are offered a wider range of treatment options; they have earlier access to treatments which are not available to the public or at other practices; they participate in trials in a personalised primary care atmosphere; and in many cases obtain the clinical trial medicine at no cost while receiving extensive medical care associated with the trial.

Dr Bloch added that involvement in clinical research increased public awareness about health problems, and the trials encourage people to seek treatment.

He said, “Involvement in cutting edge clinical research ensured that HHMP’s doctors both in Darlinghurst and Byron Bay further develop their skills in the latest treatments”
