A Kickstart to Health
Sydney Morning Herald 1/1/2006
Stop smoking, Vote Nutrition, don't binge on Alcohol and get Physical
before your body SNAPs, writes Debbie Elkind.
Do you have a healthy lifestyle? There are the obvious no-nos - quit smoking, don’t binge drink, don’t survive on fast food and don’t take drugs unless they’re prescribed by your doctor. But beyond that, how would you know whether your lifestyle has the Heart Foundation's tick of approval? We asked six health experts to define "a healthy lifestyle".
Dr Kate Bessey, GP, Holdsworth House Medical Practice
"My philosophy is that everything is good in moderation and nothing is good in excess. The only exception to that is smoking. All smoking is bad.
"Having a healthy diet means including lots of fruits and vegetables and fibre and avoiding an excess of saturated fats, processed foods or too much coffee. People should drink more water than they do, I recommend at least 2 litres a day.
"I think it's very unhealthy to be working stupidly long hours (and that) people should try to take at least one vacation a year. No one is indispensable and you’ll feel better for it and more productive.
"It’s also important to have the support and encouragement of good friends and family and to give regular, positive feedback to everyone around you. If you are positive it gets reflected back to you and that leads to general happiness and wellbeing."
