Holdsworth House Medical Practice Byron Bay has been operating since 2005 and is the second branch of our comprehensive health service. Located centrally in idyllic Byron Bay, our GPs and nursing support team offer specialised health services tailored for the lifestyles and health needs of the Byron Bay community and its visitors.
As well as General Medicine, Michelle has an interest in Hepatitis C and HIV. Having graduated in 1978 from the University of Sydney, she has lived and worked in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW since 1981. Michelle is an accredited prescriber of methadone and buprenorphine.
John's special interests are HIV, Sexual Health, and Clinical Research, as well as tropical medicine, travel medicine, rural and Indigenous health. John graduated from the University of NSW in 1974 and has since had solid experience in General Practice while being a member of many national and international steering committees on HIV and Sexual Health. He has been lecturing at Medical Schools at Griffith and Bond Universities, holding an academic title of Associate Professor at both Universities since 2004. Having worked in Papua New Guinea, Northern Territory and Queensland, John now brings his extensive experience to the Byron Bay community.
Dr Charles McDonald graduated from the University of Sydney in 1974, and spent the following four years working as resident in various hospitals in Sydney: Royal North Shore, St Margaret's for Women and Children, and St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst. Charles did rural surgical training at Hawkesbury Hospital prior to a year of remote procedural general practice in Bowen, North Queensland. Back in the Hawkesbury area during the eighties, he ran a busy family practice in Windsor with a special interest in childbirth, as his own children grew. Finding people more fascinating than disease, he completed a Master of Psychological Medicine from University of NSW in 1993. Charles spent the next 10 years in the field of Psychiatry in Nepean Hospital, and in Psychiatric Outpatients at St Mary's, as well as being a surgical assistant in Hawkesbury and Nepean Private Hospital. To maintain his surgical connection Charles did surgical assisting in various theatres and joined Tweed Skin Cancer Clinic on moving to Byron Bay in 2004. In 2006 he returned part-time to his old love, general practice, enjoying in particular lifestyle medicine, psychological medicine and skin cancer surgery. Charles then joined Holdsworth House Medical Practice in Byron Bay during August 2008.
Hugh graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1997 and obtained his fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2001. Over the past 10 years he has gained valuable experience across diverse general practice settings in Sydney, Melbourne and the NSW Northern Rivers. He first commenced work in Byron Bay at the former Shirley Street Family Practice in 2005 and has developed a good knowledge of local health needs and services. His interests include the management of chronic illness, including coronary heart disease, diabetes and HIV infection, and also sexual health and mental health problems.
Kim graduated from the University of Queensland in 2000 after obtaining her medical degree; she has since completed her GP training in Northern Australia and worked extensively in the region. Her areas of interest are women's health, travel medicine, adolescent and sexual health, as well as aviation medicine. Kim is also a CASA approved designated Aviation Medical Examiner and performs aviation medicals at Holdsworth House.
After graduating from the University of Queensland in 2006, Veronica completed her resident medical years at Logan Hospital in South East Queensland. She has spent the last two years in General Practice in South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers Region. Her special interests include preventative healthcare, family planning and children's healthcare.
