Kenya Aid became an incorporated association, was granted charitable status by the ATO in 2006 and was given a charitable authority to fundraise by the Department of Gaming and Racing in January 2007.
The board members of Kenya Aid have travelled to many different parts of Africa working in diverse areas, from large referral hospitals to remote rural clinics. In this time we have personally noted the injustice of unacceptable standards of living for the majority of Africans. This is clearly seen in the lack of basic human rights such as sanitation, healthcare and education. Kenya Aid is initially focusing on healthcare due to the enormous needs in areas where few have the money to access the scarce health resources and services available.
Importantly, the region in which our work focuses has no existing programs from any other Aid/Development organisation.
Working together with the local community and local Kenyan NGO's over the last three years we have developed and opened a primary health clinic servicing the local rural community. Since then we have been providing low-cost health care to those in Kenya's poorest region, and we are determined to continue, expand and improve these life-saving services.
In addition to our focus on health care provision we also place an emphasis on education for preventative health strategies. This includes simple measures such as improving hygiene, sanitation and nutrition. We also take a community based approach to tackling the three biggest killers in the region, HIV, TB and malaria by raising awareness and introducing specific prevention methods. We believe that knowledge is one of the keys to lasting change.
In the future Kenya Aid hopes to expand its work in the Western Province of Kenya by developing additional clinics in areas of need, to create a network of accessible and professional health-care services. Currently, we have a new and larger clinic under construction and soon hope to build an AIDS hospice, with the kind support and guidance of Sydney’s Holdsworth House Medical Practice, to provide dignity and support to those terminally ill with HIV.
