A dental implant is an artificial tooth replacement, designed to effectively replace missing teeth, or teeth that can't be saved
by conventional means. Dental implants can range from single tooth replacement to a complete upper and lower arch replacement.
A typical dental implant consists of a titanium screw (resembling a tooth root) and the crown, usually of high grade porcelain, fused
to precious metals like gold.

The most common dental implant treatment plan calls for several surgeries over a period of months. At the other end of the surgery
scale, some patients can be implanted and restored in a single surgery, in a procedure known as "immediate function."
A single implant procedure that involves an incision of the gum or gingiva (to expose the jawbone) takes about an
hour, sometimes longer; multiple implants can be installed in a single surgical session lasting several hours. At the conclusion,
the patient goes through a period of recovery, returns to consciousness and is sent home with a spouse or friend.
Suitability for dental implants
Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. The main limitation
is the amount of available bone. Your dentist is the best person to evaluate whether dental implants are a viable solution for you.
You may be a potential candidate provided you:
- Have adequate bone with regard to quality and volume
- Have good oral hygiene and
- Meet the general medical requirements
What are the advantages of dental implants over dentures or a bridge?
- Dental implants are considered a permanent solution. The implant does not require adjustment and is stable and comfortable
- No damage to your healthy teeth, some traditional practices involve grinding down healthy teeth to anchor a bridge.
- Improved appearance, losing teeth and the shrinkage of the jawbone can cause your face to appear sunken
and aged, dental implants can negate this effect.
