We are conducting a research study that compares treatment for recurrences of genital herpes.
To be eligible you must be at least 18 years of age, medically diagnosed with genital herpes, and be in good general health.
Currently licensed drugs are administered and qualified participants receive physical exams and treatment, free of charge.
General Information
This study is designed to compare the safety and effectiveness of two treatments for genital herpes. These treatments are famciclovir (Famvir) given as 1000mg twice-daily for one day and valaciclovir (Valtrex) given as 500mg twice-daily for three days. You may be invited to participate because you experience recurrent genital herpes. Approximately 1100 patients throughout the world will take part in this study.
Background to the study
Both famciclovir and valaciclovir tablets have been licensed in Australia for over 10 years to treat genital herpes. However the recommended co use for both drugs is 5 days. Recently, shorter courses have been shown to be as effective as the 5-day course and are now approved this way in the USA. The shorter courses are 1-day for famciclovir and 3-days for valaciclovir. This study will compare these two short courses as treatment for one episode of genital herpes. The study will also determine if either treatment has an effect on the time it takes for your next outbreak to occur, and if the virus develops resistance.
Study design
In this study, patients have an “equal” or 50% chance (like flipping a coin) of being treated with either famciclovir 1000mg twice-daily for 1 day or valaciclovir 500mg twice-daily for 3 days. All participants will also take a dummy version (sugar tablets) of the other course. No one involved in the study will know which treatment a patient receives because the study is blinded. However this information is available if medically necessary. There is no placebo treatment in this study.
