CLINICAL RESEARCH - ABOUT THE RESEARCH UNIT
HHMP has participated in research trials since the
practice was founded, and the semi-autonomous Research
Unit has grown to become one of Sydney’s most
ambitious and comprehensive. HHMP has participated
in almost every major national and international HIV
clinical trial conducted during the past few years,
and is one of Australia’s largest recruiter
for HIV treatment studies.
The Research Unit has participated in over 50 studies,
and is constantly supervising the progress of between
10 to 20 trials at any time. The number of participants
for each trial ranges from 5 to over 200.
Most of the trials involve drugs which are in their
final testing and marketing stage, and the studies must
be approved by an independent Ethics Committee. The
trials are conducted for private pharmaceutical companies,
collaborations with other practices, studies initiated
by HHMP, and trials in collaboration with the National
Centre in HIV Epidemiological and Clinical Research;
although research trials are not limited to HIV treatments.
